Interested to learn how to play your favorite song? There are several guitar tab websites around that provide guitar tabs for not just the current popular chart-topping songs, but for a wide variety of songs.

Typical guitar tab websites offer free guitar tabs, but they’re usually not endorsed or licensed by the musician or the company that owns the rights to the song. Access to licensed guitar tabs is usually chargeable, but the advantage is that you will get a correct version of the guitar tab. Most of the free guitar tabs are created by fans and while most do a pretty good job, the accuracy of the guitar tab cannot be guaranteed.

That said, here are some of the more popular guitar tab websites:

Chordie.com

Hello I’m Ben,

Thanks for checking out my Guitar SuperStars review. This guitar lesson package is very popular, but is it really worth it? Well, Guitar SuperStars offers a well-structured lesson plan made up of many lessons given by experienced and talented guitar teachers.

Introducing Guitar SuperStars

Note: This is a review, click here to visit the Guitar SuperStars website.

Guitar SuperStars is a popular way to learn the guitar, but it’s always good to get a review first. In this Guitar Superstars review, we find out just how good Guitar Superstars is, and whether or not it’s worth buying to learn the guitar.

I have personally bought and used the Guitar SuperStars program for 2 weeks. Besides Guitar Superstar, I have had the group guitar classes, personal guitar lessons, followed online guitar videos, and bought other guitar lesson programs as well.

I found Guitar SuperStars to be a well laid out lesson program with professional, high-quality lesson videos. This is not your amateur videos, and you can tell that there was a lot of work put into the production of these guitar videos.

Value For Money

For its price, this program is affordable compared to the other guitar lesson alternatives. For instance, comparing it to the $25 (minimum) that you have to pay for EACH guitar lesson by a guitar teacher, it quickly becomes clear how affordable this program is. For me, it was the money-back guarantee that made me take the leap and give this guitar program a try – after all, there was nothing to lose!

For the price of 2 personal guitar lessons, I now have several months’ worth of guitar lessons to keep me occupied. I can take these guitar lessons whenever I want, and I can also pause and rewind the guitar videos (which I find myself doing a lot). You obviously can’t do that in a personal guitar lesson, so it’s something that I found indispensible.

Click Here to Learn to Play the Guitar Like a Pro. All from your own home computer.

The Actual Guitar Lessons

Consisting of many individual guitar lessons of progressive difficulty, you will need to go through drills and be given tips to help with your guitar training. I liked the fact that each different guitar playing style had a different teacher (and it’s an accomplished, experienced teacher!). The best thing is that you can go through each lessons as many times as you need to, and at the pace that you’re comfortable with. That’s one thing that I appreciate about Guitar SuperStars that you can’t get in normal guitar classes.

When you go through the guitar lessons, it’s very clear that the guitar teachers know their stuff. In fact, they answer a lot of the questions in advance that people would normally have if they were taking the same lesson in person, so it’s a level of detail that I really appreciate.

Real Practice, Real Work

As with any form of guitar lessons, you can’t expect to be a guitar expert just by watching a guitar video. You’ll need hard work and practice, and lots of it. With perseverance, you’ll be able to get the results that you want, and be really good with the guitar. The good thing is that this lesson package is comprehensive and well-structured enough to be a fantastic teaching aid in your journey to be a guitar expert.

Click Here to Go to The Official Guitar SuperStars Website

With Guitar SuperStars, my guitar skills have gotten much better, and I’m finding myself capable of playing difficult rock solos that I wasn’t able to play just a few weeks ago. I’m excited to think about where I’ll be a month or two from now.

Any Bad Points About Guitar SuperStars?

I’m very satisfied about Guitar SuperStars, but if you ask me, there is one sore spot. Guitar SuperStars comes with a software called GSS Jam Machine. This is a software that create Jams to enhance your collaborative ability play along with tracks that you create. What this does is similar to a track sequencer, and allows you to throw in drums and other music instruments to the guitar tracks that you play. This is great when you get better, because it’ll make your playing sound a lot cooler. Well, it sounds cool, but I’m not a big fan of this GSS Jam Machine software, and have not used it since the first time I tried it out.

That’s not a problem to me though, because I’m interested in this program for a one-time flat fee to access a lifetime’s worth of guitar video lessons and updates. If you’re willing to invest the time and effort to practice, then this is definitely a bargain.

Conclusion – Is Guitar SuperStars Worth Buying?

In my opinion, it definitely is. The low price-point already makes it attractive, and when you consider the wealth of knowledge with all the professsionally created guitar video lessons, then it becomes a no-brainer. I guess that just about sums up my Guitar Superstars review. If you choose to get Guitar SuperStars, remember to stay committed, and you’ll find yourself becoming an expert with the guitar in no time.

Learning how to play the guitar can be made easier with the help of good instructional guitar books and videos. You can read or watch whenever you have time, and as many times as you like. Here I’ll showcase just a few of the better guitar books and videos, and even some CD-ROMS.

Guitar Pro 6

Guitar Pro 6 is easy to setup, and gives you a complete range of tools to building musical arrangements, without requiring additional hardware. It’s well-designed so that even beginners will have no problems. All of the commonly used music notation symbols can be found in Guitar Pro 6, such as glissando and tremolo symbols.

Finding tabs online in Guitar Pro’s .GP6 format is also easy, and when you download someone else’s tab, you can edit it – by changing tunings, keys or correcting any errors. Guitar Pro 6 is an excellent software for creating and editing guitar tabs, especially at its price!

The eMedia Guitar Method program is great because you learn the guitar at your own pace. The great thing is that I am learning the guitar and having fun doing so, which is the point for me. Click here for my eMedia Guitar Method review.

Music Theory for Guitarists: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know But Were Afraid to Ask

Learn the proper way to think about what you’re playing, and learn much more about guitars. Kolb covers everything starting with basic fretboard layout, and goes to tuning, and even in the later chapters, still makes music theory approachable for guitarists at any level!

The accompanying CD illustrates all manner of chord progressions, and provides helpful points regarding improvisation and writing harmony. Highly Recommended.

Guitar Fretboard Workbook

If you’re looking for a guitar book that can communicate an understanding of music and the fretboard to you, then this is it. The book has a structured lesson plan that brings you progressively from simple to advanced. It definitely helps guitarists understand the scales and visualize the fretboard more easily.

One of the good thing that this guitar book does is it introduces an innovative method to learn the fretboard – by patterns! Other guitar books can provide explanations that are overwhelming, but this book is great in its explanations, and connects everything for you perfectly, instead of YOU having to piece things together yourself.

This is the latest version of EMedia’s Guitar Method, a long-time bestselling beginner’s guitar course on CD-ROM. You’ll get 165 comprehensive guitar lessons that cover everything that you need to properly learn how to play the guitar. These lessons come with options for either tablature or music notation, so you’re covered even if you don’t know how to read music notation.

The guitar lessons that you’ll find on this CD-ROM include:

Chord strumming

Playing melodies

Fingerpicking

Strumming styles

Power chords

What I found immensely useful about this guitar lesson package is that it provides over 50 videos taht include split-screens and close-ups of both hands. Usually, guitar training videos that I find online are done poorly, and typically do not show both hands. That’s a big problem because I want to know how to finger my chords and how to strum/pick, and that involves both hands.

The instructor in this guitar lesson package is Kevin Garry, Ph.D., and he covers many genres of music, ranging from folk, blues, classical to modern rock styles. Over 70 songs are featured, including famous hit songs from artistes such as Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead, and Steve Miller.

All songs provided in this guitar lesson package have an animated fretboard that guides you through the right fingerings. You can even slow down MIDI tracks and choose to loop certain parts of the song to practice more on them. While this guitar lesson package starts with very basic chords and then keeps building on what you have learned, it is easy to use and you can take anything at your own pace. I have gone back to the beginning numerous times, and repeated songs countlessly until I finally got it.

What Other People Say About The EMedia Guitar Method Program

This software starts you off as if you have never picked up a guitar before.

You learn the easiest single finger chords first, learn the basics of strumming, then double strumming, then emphasis strumming, all the while learning additional chords with each lesson. Each lesson has you playing an actual folk song. Each lesson builds on the last, and there are constant quizzes so you can memorize the chords. This has been helpful to me.

I’m only through the first several lessons, and from someone who can play the guitar, but never actually had any training and never learned to read notes, this is software awesome. I’m actually learning to read and understand tabulature, have actually learned what the chords are and I’m making tremendous progress. I’m pretty stoked. I only used to play by ear and this is helping so much.

After only the first few lessons, a portion of the training will list a bunch of songs you should be able to play based on the chords you’ve learned. These link to a google search, that will take you to tab pages. I learned to play a Pearl Jam song already. Good times!

Verdict – Is EMedia Guitar Method Worth It?

EMedia Guitar Method is a great at home guitar program, as it has a very nicely structured step-by-step approach to the guitar lessons. Techniques are demonstrated very clearly in the videos so it’s almost as though a guitar instructor is right there in front of you.

I’ve taken a few lessons with a private guitar teacher, bought another basic beginner book/DVD, and learnt from free guitar videos on the Internet. Every one of these, and a good amount of practice, has certainly helped me pick up some basic guitar skills, but this EMedia Guitar Method lesson package has been the real turning point for me, and I highly recommend it to anyone who’s serious about learning the guitar.

When I stumbled upon Jamorama one day, I was beginning to feel really frustrated, and quickly decided that I should spend some money to see if this program would get me anywhere. In the end, I was surprised that I felt rather impressed with everything. The price was really damn reasonable. It even came with an ear-training game!

That’s the picture of Ben Edwards – he’s the creator of Jamorama. Ben is a respected guitar teacher, with a Bachelor of Education. Ben was also the former lead guitarist for the popular down-under band “DegreesK”, and toured with them internationally.

After you made the purchase, you’ll be given immediate access to the Jamorama site, where you can download all their software, articles, tabs, and videos. As of now, membership is permanent, and any upgrades and new offers are provided free-of-charge to existing Jamorama members.

Who Will Benefit From Jamorama?

I started with Jamorama as an intermediate guitar player, but from the lessons, anyone who’s an absolute beginner to intermediate students will benefit. Because of the nature of the lessons, Jamorama will apply to, and help, both electric guitar learners and acoustic guitar learners (many of the videos and illustrations in Jamorama will show pictures of both types of guitars too). In fact, I have a visitor who emailed me saying that his 8 year old son who learned the electric guitar through Jamorama.

The main learning package consists of a few separate downloads. There are different installers (current supports Windows and Mac) for the eBooks, audio, and video. There are 3 books to read, namely: Beginner (95 pages), Intermediate (51 pages), and Advanced (29 pages).

For each lesson, there are audio and video files too. To check out the video for the pictured lesson, click here:

WMV (2.61 MB)
or
MOV (2.00 MB).

There are large, medium, and small videos for every lesson, in both Windows Media and Quicktime (the sample videos linked here are small). Fun random bits are also included in the pages, such as tips, encouragements, and trivia.

The pictures in the Jamorama eBooks are very clear and easy to understand. The Beginner lessons start with an explanation on the different types of guitars, how to hold them in different positions, and how to position your hands. Again, clear pictures are included to illustrate each of these topics.

Everything necessary for you to start learning how to play the guitar is included. The Beginner book has 15 lessons. Each lesson has audio and video files to help you along, and the lessons are very comprehensive. The book moves into chords and playing basic songs quite quickly, and give you enough instruction so that you are assured to do it well. The lessons are progressive and very well structured, so by the end of the Beginner lessons, you can be sure that you are well-prepared to take on the Intermediate lessons.

Unlike several other guitar courses, the video lessons that are found in Jamorama are all done in a very clear and easy-to-understand manner. The guitar lessons are also sequenced in a comfortable structure, and you can learn as fast as you want. If you’re very determined, it’s possible to finish 4 or 5 guitar lessons in a day. At that rate, you would probably be a pretty good guitar player after a month.

Ideally though, I found that the more time you spend on a specific lesson, the better. You should fully grasp and master whatever the lesson teaches, and make sure you burn it into muscle memory before you progress to the next lesson. I recommend going through a lesson and practicing what it teaches, for at least 2 days. When you become an experienced guitar player, you’ll be thankful for the solid foundation that you’ve built, because it’ll allow you to master the more advanced guitar techniques easier.

I started on this program as an intermediate player, so I had to skip through quite a bit of the beginner lessons, but otherwise I think this is a comprehensive and thorough guitar lesson package that gives you a lot of value for the money.

Jamorama also comes with “Jam Tracks”, which are sound files in MP3 format that help you learn to adjust to rhythms and play along. There are very clean beats in the background of each track, to make it easy to follow along with, and almost any style imaginable is available. They’re in the eBooks as part of the lessons, so you can read to follow along while you listen to them.

My Verdict

If you’re looking for the best way to learn the guitar, Jamorama is it. It’s a fast and easy way to learn how to play guitar. There are hundreds of other guitar lesson packages claiming to be the “Ultimate Guitar Lesson” package, but this is the best deal around because in terms of value, and getting you up to speed with the guitar, Jamorama is the best of the best.

Jamorama is professionally put together, and I was really impressed by how helpful the instructions were. I used to go to the search engines and try to find scattered bits of guitar lessons and guides, but ever since I tried out Jamorama, it saved me a load of time and effort. In addition to the excellent lessons, the Jamorama package also gives you access to bonus games, software, articles, and tablature.

Jamorama is perfect for you if you don’t want to spend $200 for an all-video guitar lesson course. Jamorama instead gives you an excellent ebook + video + mp3 training course that’s comprehensive, complete, and done in a very professional way. Essentially, it’s a full, but low-cost way to get started with learning how to play the guitar. For these reasons, I highly recommend the Jamorama guitar lesson package. Still hesitating? Don’t – Jamorama comes with an 8-week money-back guarantee (that’s 60 days!), so I’ll recommend you to just get the package, go through the lessons, and personally experience for yourself how fast you’ll be progressing with the guitar.

Guitar tablature, or guitar tab for short, is a great way of learning how to play the guitar, especially for people who don’t know how to read musical notation. The terms tab and tablature are one and the same, and tab is just a shot-form for tablature.

This guide will probably be more than what most beginners require, so bookmark this page for easy reference, and return to it as often as you’d like to increase your knowledge and learn more about guitar tabs. Eventually, you’ll know enough about guitar playing and guitar tabs to write your own tabs.

Guitar Tab Basics

Guitar tab is a shortform method for showing you how to play the guitar. Usually, guitar tabs are for six-string guitars, but guitar tabs for twelve-string guitars can also be found. Guitar tabs are simplified graphics showing you which strings and at which frets to play. In fact, guitar tabs make it so easy to play the guitar that you can even pick up a guitar and play the right sounds without even knowing what notes they are.

However, the drawbacks of guitar tabs are that they do not show you how long to hold a note, or how fast to play a passage.

If you look at a guitar tab, try to see it as a simplified graphical representation of a standard, right-handed, six-string guitar. Each line corresponds to each string on the guitar See it as the guitar with its neck to your left, and its body to your right, like this:

<guitar neck graphic to the left>

Each line, or string, has its note displayed on the tab as well. The high-e string is at the top of the tab, and the low-E string is at the bottom. There are no restrictions for the maximum length of a tab sideways, but most people keep it short enough so that it does not wrap on a webpage.

How To Read Guitar Tabs (Sample Guitar Tabs Provided)

By going through these tutorials based on the following guitar tab samples, you’d be able to go off and learn guitar tab reading by yourself. In the first example, you’ll see that there is a number 3 on the A string. This just means to play the 3rd fret of the 5th string.

e----------------------------------------------------------
B----------------------------------------------------------
G----------------------------------------------------------
D----------------------------------------------------------
A-----3----------------------------------------------------
E----------------------------------------------------------

In the previous example, only one string is played. However, when multiple strings are needed, such as when you’re playing the A chord, then you’ll find that the tab will look something like this:

e----------------------------------------------------------
B------3---------------------------------------------------
G------3---------------------------------------------------
D------3---------------------------------------------------
A----------------------------------------------------------
E----------------------------------------------------------

Sometimes, you’ll get chords that require you to not strum the low-E, or A strings. When this happens, the guitar tab will have an x on the string, like in this case:

e----------------------------------------------------------
B------1---------------------------------------------------
G----------------------------------------------------------
D------2---------------------------------------------------
A------3---------------------------------------------------
E------X---------------------------------------------------

Advantages of Guitar Tabs

Guitar tabs lets you know exactly where to place your fingers. For people who aren’t musically trained, or for casual guitarists, tabs are great because there’s no need to figure out the notes or string names. You just have to look at the guitar tab, place your fingers correctly, and start playing!

No special or additional software is needed to read, modify, or write guitar tabs. Any web browser would be able to view guitar tabs without the need of extra plug-ins, and any text editors will allow you to write your own guitar tabs.

Disadvantages of Guitar Tabs

There are no standards for writing guitar tabs. People write guitar tabs loosely based on what others have done in the past before. However, because of this, soemtimes you have to sift through various versions of guitar tabs to find a good one that you can ready and understand. With music notation, you get all the standard information such as key, time signature, tempo, loudness, and style. With guitar tabs, the author may put them in as additional information if you’re lucky, but this isn’t typical of most guitar tabs.

Guitar tabs can’t show strumming patterns or the duration of notes. How long do you hold the chord and notes? Most of the time, you’ll need to hear someone else play the song before in order to know how to properly play the song according to the guitar tab.

Now Go And Play The Guitar!

That’s it. Guitar tabs are simple, and they’re meant to be simple. You might come across guitar tabs with strange, unfamiliar symbols, but you should find explanations for them on the guitar tab itself.

If you are only just starting out as a guitarist then there are some things that you are going to need. As well as this, there are some important points to remember. All of these things will help you on your way to becoming the best guitarist that you can possibly be. Firstly, you are going to need to buy yourself the guitar. You can either get an electric or an acoustic, both of which have many variations. It is important that you choose a guitar that is the right size for you. Many people start off with an electric guitar (see the best beginner electric guitar kit) as they are easier to learn on.

The next thing that you are going to want to get is some guitar picks. These come in all different shapes and sizes, and also different materials. If you are a beginner it would be best to work with a pick that is flexible as this is going to be easier to handle. Amazon has a ton of great guitar picks here. Another thing that you should purchase is a book that demonstrates some of the most basic chord structures. You are going to need to know all of them in order to be able to play. A better idea is to get an all-in-one guitar lesson package, since it doesn’t cost much more too. For this, I highly recommend Jamorama, since it’s what I used too. Check out my review on Jamorama.

If you can, it is also a good idea to purchase a capo. A good place to get it is Amazon, which has many capos available at fantastic prices. A capo is a little tool that is attached to the fret board on your guitar. When it is attached it changes the pitch of a chord. Why is this important? Well, it can often make playing guitar much easier as it will allow you to avoid most bar chords, which for a beginner are actually very difficult. Capos are relatively cheap too, depending on where you get them.

Spare strings are always a good idea. This is because when you are only just starting to learn how to play guitar, it can actually be very difficult. It is not uncommon to break strings, so this is why it is a good idea to always have a spare set to hand. You can buy guitar strings in most places these days, and I usually get mine from Amazon. Check out the guitar strings by Martin, I’ve been using them almost exclusively, and highly recommend them. If you are going to buy strings then another good idea is to purchase a string winder. This can make replacing the broken strings on your guitar much easier to do. All of these things are going to help you if you plan on learning how to play the guitar, and they are all essential items for the guitarist.
