While there are no standards for guitar tabs, there are a few common guitar tab notations and conventions that people use. The following is by no means an exhaustive list, but covers several common guitar tab notations that you can refer to.

Notation Example Description
h h3 Hammer-On: Sharply bring down your fingertip to the fingerboard behind a fret
p p4 Pull-off: “Pull” the string off the fingerboard with a finger of your fretboard hand
PM PM Palm mute: The strumming hand muffles the strings
s 5s6 Slide: Play the note at the 5th fret, then slide your finger up to the 6th fret
T T Tap: Tap the string with a finger of your strumming hand
v v5 Vibrato: Vary the pitch slightly by wriggling your fretboard hand
