Recommended Guitar Books & Videos

Learning how to play the guitar can be made easier with the help of good instructional books and videos. You can read or watch whenever you have time, and as many times as you like. Here I’ll showcase just a few of the better books and videos, and even some CD-ROMS.

eMedia Guitar Method Volume 1 for Beginners CD-ROM

eMedia Guitar Method Volume 1 for Beginners CD-ROM

The eMedia Guitar Method Volume 1 for Beginners CD-ROM contains over 160 comprehensive lessons covering everything from the basics through chord strumming, playing melodies, and fingerpicking. New modern rock chapter includes various strumming styles, movable power chords, and power chord riffs.

Now with over 50 videos from instructor Kevin Garry, Ph.D., including split-screens and close-ups of both hands.

Learning guitar is made fun through over 70 songs including familiar hits from artists such as Bob Dylan, the Grateful Dead, and Steve Miller. This new version also includes a new rock rendition of “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” in the style of Guns N’ Roses.

Includes an animated fretboard, which displays the fingering for each song and exercise in real-time, adjustable to 4 different viewing angles. Multitrack audio gives full band accompaniment on many of the hit songs. Variable-speed MIDI track option allows students to practice any song or exercise at whatever tempo they want.

Learn guitar using either tablature or standard music notation. Additional features include a built-in automatic tuner, digital metronome, recorder, and 250-chord dictionary.

This is a great learning tool, better than books or videos. Completly interactive!!! It has tons of lessons and examples you can use to practice according to your skill level. If you think a lesson is to tough for you then go back a few lessons and try them again. You can slow down or speed up all songs using the included midi files with a visual fretboard in case you forget a particular chord. In addittion to the visual fretboard the program includes a chord dictionary where you can find more than 250 chords!

Lessons are progressive, meaning that new lessons are built based on previous excersices plus adding new information as you go through the course. You’ll find mini chord test in the program to test your new acquired knowledge.

Another usefull feature is that you can highlight a whole song or just part of the song you are having problem with, and have the program repeat that part over an over again untill you feel confortable with the song.

The program makes referece to OLGA (On-Line Guitar Archive) where you can find 100’s of songs for your skill level. If you find the songs to be boring you can always look for the ones you like at OLGA.

Conclusion: This software is the best interactive learning tool I have found. I have a couple of books and videos and none can be compared to eMedia Guitar Method. I recommend this software 100%

… and remember to …. practice … practice … and practice … because practice is the mother of all skills!!!

Fender Getting Started On Electric Guitar DVD

Fender Getting Started On Electric Guitar DVD

Over 3 hours long with 50 interactive lessons. Covers tuning, essential chords and scales, music reference, practice tips, rhythm techniques, play-along tracks with a band, 3-D fretboard graphics, instrument care, and more. Includes 5 languages: English, French, Spanish, Japanese, and German. Hosted by Keith Wyatt of the Musicians Institute.

I really did not intend to write a review, but when I went to buy this DVD the only user review showing rated it 1 in every box. My experience was much better. I have been playing for a while, and have had lessons from a very good teacher, but the value of a good DVD is much more than you get from even the best lessons. The DVD has a road map that you need to look at a few times to make sense of what you have, but many of the lessons can be practiced with included practice tracks that repea until you get tired or learn how to follow it along. There are 50 short lessons on the DVD,so it can seem like it jumps around a bit, but the layout means you can look at the map and locate a secction you liked. One reviewer complained about Keith Wyatt’s fingering but that is so much bs, people’s hand shapes vary a lot, and what works for someone may be impossible for another, also I use different shapes (as a lot of people do) depending on what comes next, or if I want it to “ring”. Some shapes are fast and dirty. This is a great value in a DVD.

Bill Edwards Publishing Complete Fretboard Logic System Box Set (DVD)

Bill Edwards Publishing Complete Fretboard Logic System Box Set (DVD)

The Bill Edwards Publishing Complete Fretboard Logic System Box Set (DVD) gives you the entire Fretboard Logic guitar system at a special package price. Introduces the guitar’s unique tuning and basic fretboard patterns; builds on this foundation with chords, scales, and arpeggios; and then allows the player to focus on expressing a chosen style.

Includes Fretboard Logic SE and Fretboard Logic III in newly revised editions plus videos I and II in DVD format.

I took guitar lessons as a kid, the hum drummery was too much and I got incredibly bored. In short I just wasn’t making progress and hated playing those folksy kiddie songs like Yellow Rose of whatever. The guitar is NOT a piano and Fretboard Logic explains, in a manner even I understood, why that is so and what the differences are. I learned about this system and recently started playing again - the progress is amazing and I’m playing songs I actually want to play.

I was looking for an affordable guitar for a long time. Of course, I didn’t want to sacrifice quality which was very difficult to find. I also didn’t want a guitar that was small, as most were to fit the needs of kids. This is a full size guitar and fit all my needs PERFECTLY. It comes with everything you need to get started, and the sound is great which is surprising because of the price. If you’re a beginner, start out with this. It’s going to be hard to find something cheaper with this quality at this price.
